About ReBuild

Background
Rebuild is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization formed in 2008 to receive and sell reclaimed building material donations in order to provide funds to train unemployed and underemployed unskilled workers for “green collar” jobs and to educate the community in affordable ways to live sustainably. It acquired a 12,000 sq. ft. leased warehouse facilities in January 2009 and began operations on St. Patrick’s Day.
Located in Springfield, VA near the Edsall Road exit of I-395 and just off Backlick Road, it is easily accessible to Virginia, DC, and Maryland via I-395 or I-495 (Beltway). [click here for ReBuild Warehouse map]
Organization Mission
Train “hard-to-place” workers for careers in “green collar” jobs and educate the community on ways individuals can live more sustainably on an affordable basis.
Goals
Green Collar Job Training
- Provide an option for builders and homeowners to donate unwanted building materials, equipment, and supplies, rather than discard these into a landfill
- Enable builders and homeowners to claim a tax deduction for donating their unwanted material to ReBuild
- Provide affordable building material to homeowners, small-scale landlords, builders, renovators, and property managers that enables them to build or renovate structures that might otherwise be too costly to do so
- Use the proceeds from the sale of these materials to provide or subsidize unskilled workers in obtaining appropriate classroom and/or on-the-job training and experience in “green collar” positions to obtain necessary trade certifications, licenses, and continuing education credits
- Provide or arrange for appropriate training in such “green collar” occupations as home weatherization, solar photovoltaic and solar hot water system installation, geothermal system installation, asbestos abatement, invasive plant species removal (included pesticide application), green roof installation, home weatherization, stormwater management, native vegetative planting, wetlands restoration, deconstruction, warehouse management, and commercial woodworking.
Community Sustainability Education
- Provide ongoing community workshops on all manner of environmentally sustainable topics. Provide space for nonprofit community groups working on sustainability issues.
- Participate in community and regional exhibitions, fairs, festivals, and other events to increase the awareness in the need to recycle used building materials, train “hard-to-place” workers for “green collar” jobs, and understand how to live affordably on a modest budget.
- Speak at various neighborhood, community, regional, national, professional, and nonprofit organization meetings, forums, task forces, advisory committees, and conferences to convey the message that sustainability is affordable.
